31st October

I am still thinking through the result of Lexus vet visit. I was surprised it was his hip I really was not expecting that and I think it is quite worrying. I wish now i had asked more questions, but I am sure I can still do that. Also there are a number of options we can try, the first being x rays to confirm what is going on, or alternative treatments like joint supplements or seeing a chiropractor.  I want to reassure his fan club we will do whatever is needed to keep him moving for as long as possible. Though I do draw the line at a visit to our  'local' Bionic Vet to have him fitted with wheels!
He is actually getting around fine and very fast despite the fact all is obviously not right. He carries his leg at times, I walked him today for the first time since it happened and he thoroughly enjoyed it charging about as if nothing was wrong.

There is life in the old dog yet!

Here is Reuben/Harley with Deb's grandson.

Plenty to be cheerful about.

It looks as if Boycie will be staying in his new home. Chris says he has become one of the family and they have all fallen in love with him. He so deserves it, what a wonderful result.

I saw Chloe today and her mange looked so much better with all her hair growing back. I will see her properly tomorrow (she is due another treatment.) She is very settled and loved in her home.

Val and Stuart and five dogs are still having a wonderful holiday. We have photographic proof of the sleeping arrangements! I must admit it looks cosy I could climb in there now!

Please see Gareth's comment Monty's Blog 30th October :-

A Stafford working as a police sniffer dog! About time! I am sure they make excellent police dogs lets hope they take on more. Do you have any more information on this Gareth?

I have always said Angel would make a good working dog. Give her chance to channel all that intelligence.
I put her forward for a behaviourist practise who were looking for dogs with fear aggression to video consultations, but  sadly they thought we were too far away which was disappointing.

30th October

Not very good news for my two boys from their visit to the vet.

Khan has a benign gland tumour in his eye, not serious in itself but it is growing and becoming intrusive so it will need to be removed the op costing over £200 which we just cannot afford at the moment. He has some ointment to keep the eye lubricated in the meantime.
Lexus has a painful and 'crunching' hip. Jane let out a gasp when she heard it as she manipulated him! It is probably arthritis due to his age and he has anti inflammatorys to see if it helps but he could be on them for the rest of his life! He can have normal exercise to keep up his muscle tone but playing with his buddy Khan will be a thing of the past.
Then there was their behaviour at the vets.
Khan was stressy and silly and had to leave by the back door.
Lexus made goat noises in the waiting room, much to the consternation of the lady with the King Charles Spaniel who was paying her bill. Once in the consulting room he tried to get into the bins under the examination table when we were trying to get him to walk. Then despite his dodgy  hip he jumped up all google eyed at Jane when she got out the treats.
 He was shameful.
I suppose as Staffordshire Bull Terriers are 95% spirit he will probably manage very well but I am feeling rather depressed tonight.
Jane is usually very good to me but with the ointment and anti inflammatorys the whole visit was not cheap.

On a brighter note Val, Stuart and all five dogs are having a wonderful time. It is doggy heaven. Here is Oscar enjoying the view from the bedroom window.
Here they are on a walk, no-one else in sight.

29th October

Two lovely photos of Saffy enjoying her weekend.

At last, over the weekend, it felt easy only having five dogs around, I suppose it is an adjustment. We have been making the most of having an extra dog walker around as it is half term and have been taking Khan,Sprite and Jesse out together. We have had some lovely Autumn walks and they have enjoyed an off lead run when no-one was around.

I am afraid I have some not so good news about Lexus. I have been concerned for some time about his back legs and now it seems his left one has 'given way.' I first noticed when he was playing with Jesse, he was lying down. He and Khan also play together. I am presuming it is arthritis. He sees Jane tomorrow along with his Buddy Khan as Khan has a growth on his eye.
Although his football days may be over I can reassure you it has not stopped his wickedness!

27th October

I got into trouble with Val for saying Oscar was the only dog she had from Guildford Staffords, I know she has Tara but Tara is only a foster (at the moment ) but I have to admit I had forgotten dear Percy, how could I! I am sorry Val.
Val and Stuart and all five dogs have gone off on a well deserved holiday to a cottage in Wales that takes up to nine dogs with its own fully fenced land so the dogs can run free. The only problem is there is only one bed, not enough for two adults and five dogs! Happy Hols guys!

Saffy is continuing to settle well in her new home and they are enjoying having her with them.

Also things are still going well for Boycie in his new home. He enjoys cuddling up with Malc next to the log stove. Hope they are there tonight, it's so cold!

25th October

A preview of one of the pictures from Val's photo shoot for Battersea. This is our very own Oscar, the only one of Val's dogs that actually came from Guildford.

Here he is picture perfect. He is a stressy boy and Val did not think the shoot had gone well for him but just look at this!

Here he is just chillin at home.

23rd October

Both Boycie and Saffy seem to be getting on well in their new homes.

A further update on Boycie this morning said he had had a good second night and a busy morning.

Saffy sleeping on the beanbag after her walk this evening.

Both Saffy's and Boycie's owners have been quite surprised even overwhelmed by all your messages of support.
Instead of feeling they have adopted some random dog from a batty lady of a 'certain age' wearing muddy trousers and a desperate look in her eyes, they find they have a dog who is already a celebrity with a network of supporters who probably know more about said dog than they do and who are uncorking the champagne just because they have adopted it!

I too am incredibly encouraged by your support and evident joy at seeing these dogs find a home of their own at last, it means so much to be able to share the ups and (more often) downs of rescue with you.

We have been working towards making the rescue into a charity and we are almost there. To register and get a charity number you have to have a gross income of £5000 a year. We have certainly topped that in past years but not in the last year, I shall let you know where we stand and how we are getting on.

I am still adjusting to having so few dogs and ridiculously it is still not seeming easier. Partly it is the mix of dogs, Saffy was very calm in the car and a good influence on Angel but now Angel is getting very wound up and 'spinning' plus she and Sprite hate each other and do not like to be in the car together. So it is not easy even being below our maximum quota for the first time in about two years, I am still in no rush to take in another dog.

22nd October

Thank you all for your good wishes and comments for Saffy and Boycie.

Boycie is doing well.      Christine writes :-

Boycie on his cushion.
Boycie was very good last night when we went to bed.  Heard him snuffling a few times but no real barking.  He hasn't put a foot wrong so far and has enjoyed two walks today and is now laid by my feet, having also destroyed two balls.  Left him for over an hour and a half this morning(in crate)  when I went to work and left him the radio on and he was fine.  He is so friendly and follows us everywhere.

As you are well aware, he has to be near someone - preferably as close as possible all the time!  He doesn't look to run off when we open the back door, but we are not taking any chances until he is totally settled and knows his domain.  He sat nicely on a long line watching me muck out as well this morning.

Will keep you posted on his progress.

Saffy update.     Jude writes :-

We had a very successful first night... Saffy chilled out on "her sofa" upstairs with me while i read during the evening and then slept soundly in her crate through the night.

Today has been another great day; She's been on three good walks today & remains calm & very affectionate in the house, it's so lovely! This is her at the moment..

It has felt odd to me having so few dogs but not particularly easier, then I was very tired, yesterday was quite a day.
Today has been quiet in terms of phone calls, no requests to take dogs in, long may it last. We have to allow  for dogs being returned so I think we will make the most of it and catch our breath.

21st October (evening)

Thanks to all of you who have sent good wishes to Saffy and Boycie.
I can tell you that this evening they are both still in their new homes.

Initially Saffy was very excited and crazy when I first took her in to the house but after a good walk she has calmed down and is now 'chilling.' She has a lovely garden to enjoy and seems very happy.
Saffy 'Just Chillin.'

Boycie survived the journey without being sick and met the Shetland pony who was not much bigger than him, they both seemed suitably unimpressed.
Apparently now he has made himself at home with lots of strokes from Chistine's husband and son and they think he is lovely. He has enjoyed his walk and eaten his dinner.

So far so good, two very happy dogs.

Saffy on her walk

Maisie came but we were not what her owner was expecting, she felt they could give her more time and attention than we would be able to, so took her home again!

So for the first time in longer than I can remember we only have five dogs here, long may it last!

We received a £20 donation from an elderly lady who was looking for a dog (an older, small, female) We have not yet managed to find her anything but she was grateful for our help and gave a donation towards our phone bill. Thank you Jill.

21st October

Adam and Jude came to see Saffy and thought she was lovely.
I will be taking her round to them after I have taken my daughter to work in Dorking.
They do have a cat. Saffy was supposed to be ok with cats when we took her in but she has not really had anything to do with them since she has been with us so that is a concern.

I know all of you who have followed Saffy during her time with us will be hoping and praying, along with us, that things work out for her.

(I got up early to write this as I was too tired last night. It was still dark so I thought the dogs would wait but a certain white dog started to make 'goat' noises so I ended up taking him and Khan down the garden (in the dark) Once back I thought I would settle to write this but Jesse began to whine so I left my writing and took him out. I forgot to close the back door and came up from the garden to the site of Lexus with his head in the food re-cycling bin by the back door! 'Noooo!' Too late! I ushered him in where he looked fairly contrite, especially for him. Jesse then took off into the living room and stole a Bra from the washing basket and proceeded to charge around the house with it! He has a penchant for underwear.
Please note:- Washing still in basket in living room because dog blankets have taken precedence on radiators.
Order restored.

After I have (hopefully) settled Saffy I will take Boycie to his new home.

Then this evening Maisie is coming in.

Guildford Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue has not experienced a day like this for sometime.

19th October

Today was dismal!
It started from the moment I woke thinking something must be wrong it was so dark, through having domestic anxiety so that I was late arriving at Pets At Home, which turned out to be the worst day there I can remember, not helped by the missing the charity week mix up and no-one knowing what was going on.

We took about £10 not even enough to buy the bag of  dog food we needed.
Every decision I made seemed to be the wrong one, the weather, the traffic made every journey tedious and long. When we eventually got dogs out we got soaked to the skin and Jesse upset a lady at Blackheath by jumping up. I finally arrived home after 7pm when it was dark again and came in to ...  a call from a couple interested in Saffy!
A chance for Saffy at last!

Yes, after one of the worst days I can remember, one of the best things I can ever remember happens.
The young couple live a stones throw from my ponies. They have friends with Staffies and want to give a deserving Staffie a home. They are coming to see her tomorrow and I will take her round to them and check the house on Sunday morning.
They are just going to foster to start with and see how they get on. They do work full time so I will pop in and take Saffy for a run at the ponies when they have long days. So after more than two and a half years in rescue Saffy will have her own home.

Miraculously, we now have two dogs going out on Sunday ... and one coming in ... meet Maisie

P.S. Chloe came and helped at P and H and she was a total star behaving beautifully, I could have homed her about ten times!

17th October

We will be in Godalming Pets At Home Store on Friday 19th October 10am/2pm

Next Stafford walk Sunday 18th November 10.30am

I have some exciting news. A lady came to see Boycie yesterday and I am taking him over to her on Sunday to check the house and for him to stay for a two week trial. She has horses but otherwise no other pets and is at home most of the time, it should be perfect him.
Boycie with Sally at Discover Dogs a year ago.
I know you will all, along with me, wish him all the very best.

Chloe is still getting on well in her foster home. Abi texted me that they had a lovely walk on a common and met a Staffy cross and then a whole hunt! Apparently Chloe behaved very well throughout. I will see her tomorrow.

Things are going much better with Jesse. I am fairly certain now he is not quite full Stafford. He is Stafford with a hint of Labrador! But still a very handsome chap.
Yesterday whilst walking him at Blackheath we met someone we knew a bit and they had a huge dog, a Leonberger (I presume that's how you spell it ... ) Jesse absolutely loved her and instantly became a submissive little pup.
Jesse meeting Lexus when he first came!

Growing up.

15th October

I thought the last Paul O Grady/Battersea episode was lovely. Also there was a documentary about Walking Dogs but we watched New Tricks instead.
I walked Khan and Lexus in the woods this afternoon and Lexus got left behind then came running down the path with his brown patch, smiling and his ears flapping. It filled me with such joy, I love him so much and I am so pleased we adopted him. He is beginning to show his age at times so I treasure the moments we have ... until next time he misbehaves!

Having cuddles with Mum
Poor Harry is still suffering from his eye ulcer but he couldn't be more loved so I am sure he will make a good recovery.

14th October

It has been a time of adjustment yet again with Jesse coming back and Chloe going.
As I said before it is hard finding Jesse a good playmate. I have tried walking him with Sprite but she will not play with him and runs home from the walk. I tried him out with Saffy but when he tries to play with her she thinks he is trying to steal her ball and gets protective, Angel hates him and means it but he does not seem to realise so that is a no go. Lexus will play with him but will not stop and Khan then gets jealous and barks!
That leaves Boycie, who i had thought would be too rough but in fact is not too bad, we have walked them together at Blackheath with Boycie on the extension lead and Jesse off which went quite well.
It is not really working having Jesse integrated in the home though as there is always something else going on. Now he has tasted freedom it is very hard for him and feel very sorry for him and know he is missing Lara and Moose.
Jesse in front of the Michaelmas Daisies
I am missing Chloe but she is having a great time. I saw her on Thursday where we walked her with Jesse (ironically they love each other) Ernie and Alfie and two little girls in the pouring rain and mud. Despite everything she was fine and all is going well so far.

Angel this afternoon.
Apparently Val's photo shoot went well although it took a long time. Honey came out as the real star! We look forward to seeing the results.

I was rather surprised when I was in Pets at home last week to hear that they were selling raffle tickets for their charity week. As I think I mentioned, all their managers have changed. Traditionally this would be the week we were asked to do at least four days in store and sell the raffle tickets but this time no-one told us. Apparently we have been nominated as their chosen charity so we should receive whatever money is raised but it does seem disappointing we were not asked along.

It is the last in the series of Paul O Grady Dogs at Battersea tomorrow Monday 15th 8pm ITV 1
In last weeks episode they were doing T touch or Tellington Touch a form of massage to help the dogs relax.
Boycie in his lovely harness bought for him by Sally.
I have known about this for sometime as it is used on horses. I found out a bit more about it today and tried it on some of the dogs, Angel, Boycie and Jesse. I got some very interesting results, if nothing else it improves your relationship with the dog.

Dave called me in to watch the weather on Country file this evening  ( I normally sleep through it!) Lexus who had been 'helping' me chop carrots  padded through and launched himself onto Dave's lap catching the remote control. The screen went blank , we were on to Wednesday lunchtime by the time it came back! That Dog!

10th October

I have learned that one of the dogs we homed protected his mistress recently when a chap became threatening in her home.
She writes that the dog (a four year old male) is normally so protective and gentle with her children but changed when he sensed his mistress was being threatened, the chap also noticed and left pretty quickly.
She says her heart goes out to all the poor Staffies stuck in rescue not getting chance to prove themselves as he has done! I say 'Amen' to that!

I see in Boycie that same sensitivity, he would make someone such a wonderful dog, why oh why is he still in rescue?

Here is a picture of two more of our dogs Harry and Trixie who not only found a wonderful home with Sam and Jim but were reunited after a year of separation. They are our Guildford Staffords own love story, a real Happy Ever After!
Harry is unwell at the moment with an ulcer in his eye (v. painful.) Just look at Trixie's devotion as she looks after him.
Get well soon Harry.

I have not heard from Val how the photo shoot went ... perhaps she is stuck up a one way street ...

9th October

Today was the day we swapped around again with Chloe going out and Jesse coming back. Having found it very hard when it was the other way around a few weeks ago, I found it equally hard this way round! It's a funny business this dog rescue game it seems it is not enough to take your time, your life, it takes your heart as well. I can half remember a line, possibly T.S Eliot, 'To love and not to love, to let go.'
It was all rather chaotic as everyone was there at the same time, then everyone left. Chloe went off with Ernie and Alfie and Jesse was back. It just felt weird.
Jesse has grown and grown up and is much better in lots of areas but is obviously missing Moose and Lara and we just don't have a really good playmate for him.

Kate found it hard saying goodbye to him and is happy to have him back when Moose recovers.
We send our good wishes to Moose who is having an operation on his eyelids as well as being neutered. Sore both ends poor chap!

Chloe is having a wonderful time chasing Ernie and Alfie round the garden.

Fawley in the cab.

Val met Tim and Fawley when Tim delivered some organic compost to a customers house when Val was there.

Tim also met Tara.

Tara seems to be another Lexus, enjoy windfall. Caught in the act!!!
Think of Val and Stuart and the gang as they go for their photo shoot tomorrow at 12 midday.
Someone who went yesterday wondered why there was no reply as they knocked on the door. It turned out they had followed the Satnav and were in the wrong street and had gone the wrong way up a one way street!
Lets hope Val gets on better.

8th October

Jane the vet is back and excellent news for Chloe! It is just the treatment 'Doing it's stuff,' so to speak and she should start to look better in a week or so but will probably have a similar reaction with subsequent treatments but as we have experienced before with this product it will get rid of the mange after several treatments without any re-occurrence. Demodex Mange is due to the immune system and stress is a factor as Demodex mites are found on all dogs it is just that on dogs like Chloe the numbers have got out of hand. Breeds like SBT are more prone because of their short coats. It is more common in puppies and it could just be the stress of growing that causes it (Chloe has undergone a huge growth spurt recently.)

Chloe goes to her foster home with Abi tomorrow, so I am pleased to know her skin is ok and will improve soon. I see Abi regularly so will continue to keep an eye.

Paul O'Grady For The love of Dogs was good viewing again tonight, highlighting the stress that dogs, especially Staffords, experience in kennels.
As you know we have used kennels for our rescue dogs in the past but because the dogs are now staying so long they would go mad in kennels as well as it costing the rescue a fortune. For the dogs with me we are somewhere between a kennels and a foster home as the rescue dogs are not fully integrated with our own dogs or within the home. Also, just because we are dealing with so many, they have to wait their turn resulting in some behaviour which just would not exist if they were in their own home. So please spare a thought especially for Boycie, Angel and Saffy who have all been with us far too long and so deserve a home of their own with  love and attention just for them.

Boycie particularly is a lovely boy, I cannot believe he is still waiting for his perfect home.

6th October

I am very pleased to tell you that as of yesterday we have a working boiler!

Trina.
Dave took out a contract with British Gas and as soon as possible booked a service.
We were reliably informed an engineer would be out between 8am/1pm the next day (you can even track their progress.) When the engineer arrived it turned out to be none other than Martin who is one of our owners! That made it easier to explain the house full of dogs and the tawdry attitude to housework, though his six foot four inch mate spent the whole morning looking terrified!
Martin and Shirley and their children originally adopted Trina, sadly she died and I was hoping they would take another but in the meantime they got two cats! Then a little pup called Dolly came along, not unlike Trina and I was on the phone in hours.
Skye
They called Dolly Skye, she is now two and a half.
Martin and his mate did a great job for which we are very grateful and now we have a warm house and plenty of hot water. Lovely!

Some more positive news.

Val and her pack of five (including our Tara) have been chosen by Battersea to attend a photo shoot (next Wednesday) as part of Batterseas next stage of 'Staffies Softer Than You Think' campaign.
I told you they were going to be famous soon.
It really is rare to see so many Staffords out in public together, and it is a great credit to Val and Stuart that they have achieved this, especially as they are all rescues and not all perfect with other dogs.
I am sure you join with me in looking forward to the results.

Chloe is now back to her happy, lively self and her skin improving. She is still on antibiotics and sees Jane Monday afternoon.

5th October

It must be something about Thursdays, last week we had the bitch with seven pups, yesterday I walked in to four messages again, all wanting dogs re-homed one had two dogs, so that was five dogs in total, as I went to play them through again the phone rang, yet another one!

One of the calls was a bit different, it was a solicitor concerned about an elderly female SBT left alone in a house after her owner had gone into a hospice. There were no relatives only an executor of the will.
Builders from next door had let the dog out and fed her that day and could do so the next but the concern was that the dog would be alone over the weekend before other arrangements could be made
.
I explained our situation e.g. no space, but said I would be happy to speak with the executor. (The dog was about half an hour from me.)
In the meantime I ran it past Val who took advice from a larger rescue and came up with a set procedure, suggesting if possible the dog being booked into boarding kennels.
When the executor rang me I discovered the owners will stated the dog be looked after by Dogs Trust after her death and that she had left them a legacy for this purpose.I suggested  boarding kennels to the Executor to which she said she could not do as she did not have the dog's vaccination history so no kennels would take her. She also said, with some anger that no solution had been found, she obviously thought I was going to wave some magic wand and take all responsibility for the dog from her! I tried saying she could take the dog to a vet and get it vaccinated but she said this was too difficult for her.
I said I would get back to her.
I reported back to Val but then made sure I got dinner for my family who were all waiting hungrily for me to finish on the phone.

Dinner in oven I rang her back offering to meet her at the house the next day so she could sign the dog over to me and I would either take the dog home and keep her for the weekend or take her to a vet, get her vaccinated and book her into a kennels BUT that I would need reimbursing for costs as our rescue was very low on funds.
She was much nicer than in the earlier conversation, but said she did not have access to the owners money and she did have one more avenue to try and that was an emergency number for Dogs Trust!
Oh yippety do! Now she tells me.
She said she would ring them first thing in the morning (as it was late and they would be closed.) I asked that she rang and let me know what happened even giving her my mobile number in case  I was still needed to make a trip up the A3 ... and guess what?     She never bothered ringing.

I hope Dogs Trust appreciate their legacy, next time I will get dinner before returning the calls!
Chloe looking rather pink!

Little Chloe had a bad reaction to the treatment for her Demodex. Her skin went florid and thickened and was hot and she obviously felt awful. She did keep eating and drinking which was good but she was so miserable we went back to the vet and she was given some antibiotic for her skin. Jane was still away but I have booked her an appointment with Jane, when she is back (Hooray!) on Monday, as Jane is familiar with the treatment and can advise us. It could just be the treatment doing its stuff.
Chloe is gradually looking better and I gave her a Malaseb bath yesterday, after she got soaked on her walk, and that has helped.
She has grown as we tried putting her in her little blue harness that Sam Keen bought her and it looked ridiculous, more like a collar.
She will go to Abi, her new foster on Tuesday morning ... and Jesse will come back as Moose is going in for his op.
Kate is very pleased with Jesse.
He now settles with Lara and Moose and does not play continually. He plays nicely (not too roughly) with other dogs and settles in the evening with no biting (though he did chew through the laptop lead, oops!)
It is now for me to keep up the good work Kate has done.

1st October

Thank you to those who have donated after yesterdays appeal we are very grateful!
If you just gave the price of a bag of treats you would buy for your dog for our poor rescue pooches it would really help. Thank You (in advance.)

Next Stafford Walk Sunday 18th November

I did not find Paul O'Grady For The Love Of Dogs such enjoyable viewing tonight.
I was angry and I don't suppose I was alone!
Angry at the owners who mess up a dog then hand it in for re-homing!
Angry at the owners who hand in a fifteen year old dog with health problems because they have a baby
And angry that if a Stafford had been showing as much aggression as the little dog it would never get a second chance!

At least the outcome for all the dogs was good and the owners were shown so people could make up their own minds about them.

Interesting that the aggressive dog had to learn how to be a dog, which is similar to what is happening to little Jesse pup. Having missed out on time with his Mum and siblings he is now learning with Lara and Moose. He is getting better by the day and settled with Kate and Dan last night with no biting.
He will be coming back for a while as Moose is having an operation for ingrowing eyelids and being neutered   (poor chap!)

We have a new dog looking for a home called Sparkle.
Out of the many requests we have to home dogs, he stood out as his owner was genuine, having to leave Sparkle too long after a relationship breakup and being willing to hold onto him until a home came along and because Sparkle is a lovely boy. Val assessed him and she has fallen in love with him!

Apparently he looks like Lexus! Lets hope the similarity stops there!

We gave Chloe a quiet day today as the Promeris treatment can make them lethargic, also it rained for most of the day!
We have another foster home for Chloe and I have to confess I have been making the most of having her as she gives the best cuddles.
That is why I have been writing this so late after enjoying a cuddle with her downstairs first.

30th September

Andrea,Val and Ali Taylor
Val attended Pets In Practise show today and met up with some Staffie friends.
Honey won best veteran and Nugget was third (I think)

Dont forget to watch Paul O'Grady For the Love Of Dogs tomorrow (Monday) ITV1 8pm
My Mum watched it (although not a Paul O' Grady fan,) and she enjoyed it.

Chloe has had her Promeris treatment for her Demodex Mange (the whole house reeks of it ) Lets hope it starts to work and she is less pink!

We are still struggling for funds. We have six dogs in rescue who need food and veterinary care. We are just about covering food but do not have enough to pay our vet and certainly nothing towards fuel for home visits etc we are having to cover that ourselves.
Please if you are not one of our regular followers/ donaters if you could just donate £5.00 it would mean so much so we can continue to help dogs like little Chloe.
