It is now very cold and all the rain a distant memory. So much easier being dry but the cold brings its own problems, not least, 'taking it out of you' when you are out in it all day.
None of the pups had seen frost before. It was so funny watching them trying to work it out. ''Whats this? It isn't wet but it feels funny on my paws.'
Chloe had a quiet day yesterday interspersed with lots of trips down the garden. Not that you would know she has had anything done at all, today she had a couple of walks on the lead but each time wanted more.
.
We have walked Khan and Jesse together the last two days.
Rosie is doing brilliantly. I had her out in the yard whilst I did the stables and she just pottered about and now on walks she behaves as a dog should, sniffing and running around.. We need to keep up with her recall though, as now she is bolder, she is less likely to come back!

28th November
So much better without rain and though cold that North wind has already started to dry things up.
Bright moonlight as well tonight, I could see clearly right down the garden when I took the dogs out last thing.
Chloe was spayed today. She was fine despite anxious foster mums! Apparently she woke up really quickly and she had already had something to eat when I went to collect her. The vet nurses said she is a little toughy.
Chloe has taught Rosie to run. I took Rosie up into the big field today on her own and she ran around behaving like a dog should.
I took Khan and Lexus out together, the first time Lex has had a walk this week due the weather, lack of daylight and time.
He was crazy, like a horse that hasn't been ridden for a few days. He charged about (pulling my back) ridiculous behaviour!
As his hip improved he now has another months supply of anti-inflammatorys and there was no need for further investigation.
The tablets are tiny, he has half of one twice a day which involves breaking them in half and then putting the tiny half back into the foil package. It just so happens that the remaining half goes in his breakfast. He does his usual barking and lunging as soon as he comes in from the garden whilst I fiddle around trying desperately to locate tiny half tablet, before all the dogs join in and we wake the whole village!
That Dog!

26th December
It is a bit chaotic here at the moment! After enjoying several weeks of having three foster dogs (our self imposed limit) we have gone up to four. Although this is temporary, until Jesse is clear of kc and can go to Kate, it is a bit of a shock, especially as three of them are pups of a similar age.
However, Chloe and Rosie seem to get on well and today I gave them a run together in the big top field. Chloe chased Rosie round and round, I don't think Rosie has ever run so fast before and at one point she found another gear! They are both tired tonight, sleeping happily in their beds, thank goodness!
Considering the weather and limited hours of daylight I did quite well to get everyone out and exercised today but it is hard to keep them all happy all of the time!
Only four weeks until Christmas! How did that happen?
People are already starting to look back at the past year.
Last night I created pages for Jesse,Chloe and Rosie to go on the website. Normally I don't like putting puppies on the website because you get 'silly' people interested in them who just waste your time.
However this time we had to put them on, else we would only have had three dogs on there, Angel, Sparky and Tara.
Suddenly it dawned on me. Angel is the only long term dog remaining and she will have to be with us another year to reach Saffy and Jade's record of 21/2 years before they were homed.
When you are caught up in the day to day running it is easy to lose perspective, and I have been a bit down of late but last night I felt encouraged. We started this year with lots of dogs and with Jade and Saffy really sticking, but gradually through the year dogs have found homes and really good homes at that and now we find ourselves with a whole new gang to get to know and see move on.
Yes we are short of funds but hey ho that will come in when people see we are doing a good work.
I would like to thank all of you who have stuck with us through what has been one of the most challenging years since the rescue started.
We have received a further £50 towards our target.
That means our current total is :- £129.91

Last week we received some sad news -
You probably remember little Luci the Staffie pup who Val fostered last winter, now named Molly, she was re-homed to a lovely family on Good Friday this year.
Sadly Molly's new adopted Mum passed away in October, leaving her husband Mike and two teenage daughters.
Molly, who herself had separation issues when she came in, is now being a superstar and is by their side helping them through this difficult time.
We send our deepest sympathies to Mike,Nancy and Martha our thoughts and prayers are with them.
We would also like to thank them for giving Molly a wonderful home and for their recent donation to the rescue.

24th November
What a day! Though thankfully not as bad as forecast, we managed to do six out of eight booked lessons, I got through two coats.
Having complained about the two puppies on Thursday, now we have three! Chloe has come back as she is to be spayed next week.
Having been out for eight hours and soaked to the skin I really just wanted to get in have a hot bath, hot food and relax, not be settling in a new dog. It was a bit chaotic to start with and poor Chloe had to adjust as she has had a lovely home with Abi and Ernie and Archie, and of course everyone else kicked off. However all have settled now and I got my bath.
Angel is coughing so Jesse must have had Kennel Cough, it is just as well we erred on the side of caution. Kate will foster him again once he is clear. I can't believe it. After years of using boarding kennels when KC was the norm, I can't believe Jesse managed to pick it up and now we will have it being passed for weeks until we are clear.
I include a pic of Chloe playing with Ernie, also a video clip which I uploaded thinking it was a photo and now cannot remove. I apologise but I don't think it will play.

22nd November
Adam and Saffy in reflective mood. |
. I had some time this morning so after giving the dogs a good walk I did some training with Jesse and Rosie, at least I attempted to.
First with Jesse who had had a decent off lead run and play. We tried to do some close lead work in the sand school but I just couldn't get him to concentrate, he had his nose on the ground and kept picking up the bits of twigs that had fallen from the Oak tree. He was good with his sit and stays but the lead work, forget it!
Later I tried Rosie. She was not much better plus she could smell where he had been and so was behaving in much the same way he had. Talk about one step forward two back, eventually I gave up to try again another day. It seems it is not just horses who are upset by the wind.
Yet again ran out of daylight and made the mistake, trying to save time, of walking Jesse and Rosie together, another no no, ended up taking Jesse back and walking him on his own afterwards.
Think I am getting too old for these puppies, there is a lot to be said for an older dog.
I have heard from Christine and Boycie is still thoroughly enjoying life in his new home.
Gosh it is an awful night! Wind and rain hammering on the windows. I wonder what we shall find in the morning. Think we will have to fore-go dogs usual last trip down the garden.
21st November
I cannot let today pass without mentioning the weather. It has been atrocious here today. Yesterday was wet so that it was impossible to keep the dogs clean. Rosie still has a recent scar from her spay. The garden is waterlogged, this morning seemed to be starting the same, then suddenly at lunchtime the wind strengthened, it went very dark and poured with rain driven on by a strong ,cold wind. It did eventually stop raining but remains very cold.
Something else I also wish to record for posterity. I was 'poo picking' in the ponies field today with Jesse when another dog came down the bridleway. He saw it and stood watching, I called him and eventually he came back to me. I was so proud. With him and Rosie it is a case of one step forward two steps back.
Just as you feel you are getting somewhere they then do something making you feel you are back to stage one.
Thank you to everyone who donated. With the walk money, what we collected in store and online donations we are up to £79.91 which is great but somewhat short of the £400 we were aiming for.
When we launch an appeal like we did for Saffy we have a tremendous response but when we send out a plea for running costs we get hardly anything. Yet with no funds we cannot continue the work of re-homing Staffords.
I often hear people say 'when I win the lottery I am going to have hundreds of Staffies and buy beautiful kennels ...etc.' The truth is, even if this were to happen and they had money to spare, the dogs would still get stressed in the kennels, however beautiful, for however many you helped there would still be more you could not help. It is a pipe dream.
When I started Guildford SBT Rescue (although I had no idea then how much work it would be, I thought it would just involve a few phone calls a day) I had very few resources. Our house would probably not pass a homecheck as the garden is separate, down the drive so dogs have to be taken on the lead from the house. We used boarding kennels for some of the dogs then, now with dogs staying so long in rescue, kennels would cost too much and the dogs become too stressed. After a year we joined SBT Welfare and they helped us with money (though all of their money came from public donations and fundraising)
Earlier this year we parted from them due to restrictions of only being able to take full Staffords.
Since then we have struggled with very little funds
.
How are we funded?
We charge £150 for each dog adopted. If we have had the dog neutered, vaccinated and microchipped £150 does not come near to covering the cost without taking into account food and flea treatment especially if the dog stays months!
We attend fundraising events, and have our partnership with Pets At Home and for the rest we rely on donations from YOU.
At the moment we have Jesse, Angel, Rosie and Chloe relying on us.
Val pays for Tara's food and veterinary costs, that is her giving.
We have cut down on the dogs we have in to take the pressure off us and give a better quality of life to the dogs with us but lack of funds means we cannot help other dogs out there.
We are asked EVERYDAY to take dogs in. Today we were asked if we could help with four dogs in pounds who are to be pts tomorrow.
There were two males who the owner had taken to the vet to be pts as he could not keep them and all rescues were full.
Every week we have an email with a list of dogs from pounds. This week there was a male only about 9 months old. He had Demodex mange . I was so tempted to help him, he was young, we could have treated his mange ...
Presumably everyone who reads this does so because they are sympathetic to our work.
IF EVERYONE WHO READ THIS BLOG YESTERDAY GAVE £5 WE WOULD HAVE RAISED £300
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE A LOT. GIVE WHAT YOU CAN.
THESE DOGS NEED YOUR HELP WE NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP GOING.

Apologies I got it the wrong way round. Bonny is the PAT dog not Susie.
A tree fell flattening the fence in the ponies field this morning. I got a call saying they were out at 8am and after dropping the boys for the bus went straight over there. The ponies were all back in the field but it had taken down a good 100 yards of fence allowing access into the woods.I brought the ponies in then went back later with Jessie and we attempted to saw through the tree with a hand saw. We had nearly succeeded when we realised the bit we were sawing through was the support for the main trunk and the whole thing was likely to fall at any moment! Got nothing else done and now shattered!
Long awaited physio appointment in the morning.

18th November
We had perfect weather for our Stafford Walk but a very disappointing turn out.
Sam Keen and Roxy plus Monty (Norfolk Terrier) and John and Lynne with Sky and Lynne's family with
little Jo-Jo (Yorkie) were all there as usual, Jo-Jo now 14 managing the whole walk despite a heart condition.
Roxy and Drake and family were also there again (no longer pups) they too have been on all three of our walks.
Then Bonny and Susie who John and Sam know from Agility, they are both rescues one RSPCA and one Battersea.
Saffy came with Adam and Jude and Chloe (showing off her full coat of fur) with Abi and little Evie and Lola (who managed half the walk.)
That was it! Eight Staffords and Jo-Jo and Monty.
However, there were still enough Staffords to turn heads and with less dogs it was more relaxed, providing chance to chat and all dogs (and owners) behaving impeccably with no tense moments at all.
Afterwards we were able to continue collecting outside the store, pleasantly warm in the sunshine.
Susie and Sky are both qualified PAT dogs and wore their vests whilst greeting people making lots of friends .
We collected £25 from the walk entries. £25.91 from collecting in store and we have received a further £30 from donations online.
We did not bring any of our dogs as Rosie has only just been spayed, Jesse is still coughing and it could be Kennel Cough, Angel would find it too much, also too much for Lexus with his dodgy hip.
We finished at 2pm so there was plenty of time to get home and give them all a good run.
Rosie is fine now, another who seems as if they have had nothing done after their op, she was just a bit quiet the first night due to the anaesthetic not the actual op, now raring to go.

Yesterday I saw Chloe. She has now had her second treatment for her mange and did not have such a bad reaction, she also has the most beautiful coat of fur.
It is a miracle that we have seen over and over again when using Promeris Duo to treat Demodex mange. It is not nice to use and they sometimes have a severe reaction, as Chloe did, but that is the treatment doing its stuff and killing the mites. If you remember when we treated Chloe, Jane was away and the other vet questioned why we used Promeris and did not stick with Advocate, which is the accepted treatment, but the Advocate does not go far enough, yet not many vets know about Promeris.
If you know of a dog suffering from Demodex Mange please tell their owner about Promeris Duo. I really should write to the company who make it and tell them what excellent results we have had (maybe we will get some free products too.)
Chloe is supposed to be Staffie x English Bulldog. Abi has googled some pics and says she does look like some of them but it would be hard to guess if you didn't know, I think she looks a bit like a Fox Terrier here.
Rosie was spayed today. The vets said she was very well behaved, I picked her up just after 3pm. She is feeling pretty sorry for herself and has not yet eaten anything, poor girl.
Update 10.30pm she has now had a little to eat. She is so sweet despite not feeling well and is seeking out the other dogs to lie next to.
I have been trying to buy some more marrow bones to keep the dogs quiet in their crates. Before I have got some from a Butchers in Cranleigh but as I have not been over there for a while I have tried elsewhere. Today I was successful but they were huge knuckle bones not like the ones I had before. Jesse, Angel and Sprite had one and we enjoyed some peace and quiet but both Angel and Jesse have huge bloated tums! I hope its not going to come back on me!
Not long now till the Stafford walk. I have bought some more pink hair dye so I show up. The weather is supposed to be good unlike tomorrow for my lessons.
I have a cold and am not feeling great but lets try and make it a great day like it was last year!

14th November
What a beautiful day.
Rosie had two good walks today. The first on her own over at the ponies, she went off lead most of the time.
The second with Sprite and my daughter Jessie. Again she went off lead for most of it and ran after Sprite a couple of times so she had a really good run. Only once did she start to jump all over Jessie and had to go back on the lead for awhile. She seems tired tonight.
She will now jump happily into the crate in the back of the car, and most times go willingly into her crate in the house. She is now really hungry and eating all her food, she also settles in the house as long as there is not too much 'traffic' passing through.
All my posters for the dog walk had been taken down again. I would love to know who 'polices' it.
Last year there were lots of council workers around as they were changing the route of the bridleway, but not so this year.
Jesse is beginning to get a bit frustrated only being on lead walks. He had some time out tonight whilst I prepared dinner. He demanded whatever I was cutting up and made a lovely mess with carrots, leeks and potatoes!
I started walking dogs at 1.30pm and didn't finish until 4.30pm.
I have had a lovely free few days but back to work tomorrow

13th November
My cherry tree dropped all her leaves at once, just like that, while I was walking Rosie with my friend this morning.
Angel helped me clear them just before dark.
Rosie's walk with my friend and her Spaniel went very well indeed. I did have to keep her on the lead most of the time as the Spaniel was a little worried and stuck close to 'mum' until they were used to each other. I did let her off at one point and she was fine not bothering Lexi. We met lots of other dogs including a friend riding her horse with her Labrador running beside her!
It was a very different experience not being worried about meeting other dogs and extraordinary watching Lexi and other dogs meeting with everyone accepting it as the norm not thinking anything could go wrong.
All the dogs Rosie met she said 'Hello' and sniffed showing no aggression and remaining calm.
We need to socialise her as much as possible in the next few weeks.
She was so good my friend did not believe we had encountered any problems with her
.
The walk was two hours long. Afterwards she had some food and a short rest and then we went over to the ponies with Angel and Jesse and I introduced her to the pigs.
Then we dropped off Angel and collected Sprite and headed off to Blackheath. This did not go as well as she tried to play with Jesse (who is still on lead walks) and we had only just set off with all three on leads when we met a very busy Springer and Collie. Both Sprite and Jesse lunged at the same time, Jesse out of excitement, Sprite probably from less noble purposes, they caught my daughter off balance and she went sprawling landing on her knees. She seemed to think her ankle had given way just before she fell, however her knees are fine but her ankle painful this evening.
Rosie managed a little time off then we met lots and lots of dogs. We struggled back to the carpark which was full. It seems you need to pick your times there this time of year as the short days mean it is very busy.
Rosie has been quiet this evening, surely she is tired but it has not made any difference to her being very hyper or stopped her making her noise as if she is being murdered when I take another dog out.

All the dogs Rosie met she said 'Hello' and sniffed showing no aggression and remaining calm.
We need to socialise her as much as possible in the next few weeks.

Time and money those two precious commodities were both in short supply today, and it was raining again!
Jesse went to the vet for his follow up appointment, all was fine (really you would not know he has had anything done!) Apparently the cough could be the tube or could be Kennel Cough. Hmmmn seems big coincidence, as it started after his op, if it is Kennel Cough. Rosie was assessed and is booked in for her spay on Friday.
I am walking her with my friend's Spaniel tomorrow, I will let you know how it goes.
Two pics from Rhea's agility display at Discover Dogs on Saturday.

11th November
Had a lovely day today, obviously the weather helped.
The last three years I have been at Discover Dogs on the SBT Welfare stand, last year Sally and Simon brought Boycie down as our dog as they were fostering him.
It is very difficult to find a suitable dog as they have to look like a full Stafford, be dog friendly and people friendly and not overly excitable but able to cope with the whole thing. We would do the morning and Val and Stuart take over with their wonderful dogs for the afternoon.
Boycie was a star, going into a spectacular sulk when Sally left him to look around the show. I am so glad he now has a lovely home of his own.
Sandi has come with me for the past two years, with her dog Kassi doing the greeting one year.
The first year we had a dog named Pixie who was a stray but stunning looking, she went to a home the following New Year.
I could not have gone this year as I am no longer part of Welfare but they did not have a SBT rescue stand this time but the Stafford Agility Display Team were there both days with our Guildford Girl Rhea, giving a great run on Saturday!
Anyway it was nice to have a day off and hear my husband play The Last Post on the bugle at the Remembrance Service.
Then my son and I walked Sprite and Rosie up onto the Chantries and put up posters for the Stafford Walk.
It worked really well with Rosie and Sprite as Rosie lacks confidence on walks on her own but was better with Sprite and as Sprite refuses to play she also settled even off lead. It is the first chance we have had to give her a really good run and tire her out. She met a Doberman called Ruby.
We shall certainly be walking those two together again.

Congratulations to two of our Fundraisers John Ayres and Lynne Carver and their dog Sky who has been accepted as a Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog. Excellent news!
Jesse pup's neuter went well, as with all the Staffies Jane operates on, it is as if they have had nothing done. We didn't even get a quiet evening as he seemed unaffected by the anaesthetic but he has had a bad cough today, I presume where he had the tube down his throat. I have given him honey which helps.
Rosie continues to settle in. She had a long day at the ponies today whilst I was teaching. She likes the car, she is very anxious and shows some bizarre behaviour at times.

I am pleased to tell you that Lexus is much improved!
On walks he carries his leg some of the time, or walks or canters powering off his good leg. I was going to write this yesterday and say that he could no longer manage his jaunty trot but today he even managed a few steps of that, as well as standing on his left leg and cocking his right, which he certainly couldn't do last week.
So the anti-inflammatorys are working, he is almost half way through the course. We may still x ray to see what is going on, I will discuss it with Jane.
His naughtiness however remains unabated, if not worse, he has traumatised Rose because she left 'food' in her crate and he barks throughout his meal preparations (now quite lengthy due to getting tiny pill out of packet then hiding it in his food) whatever we do to stop him has no effect whatsoever!
Rose came on Sunday. She is just over six months old and quite a big girl. She was living in a third floor flat with just a balcony for toileting, having said that she is perfectly house trained. They couldn't keep her because owning a dog was in breach of their tenancy agreement. Val went round to assess her and said she needed some input which is proving about right.
As well as finding out about Rose's little ways it is yet another adjustment. At first we put her in Chance's old crate under the kitchen table but it proved to be too exposed so now we have put her in the hall next to Angel. The crate however was not very strong so this evening we swapped them around, resulting in some radical cleaning taking place! During said cleaning I became aware of odd noise in the kitchen, it turns out we have a leak from the valve into the boiler in the cupboard which is dripping through the kitchen ceiling.
First available appointment 28th November!
Getting back to Rose,or any other new dog, it is always an exacting time. Is the dog behaving like this because it is stressed by the new environment, or is there a serious behavioural problem. As they begin to settle and respond, is it your magic touch or had they really been well trained in their former home?
And working out who gets on with who and who you can double up for a walk and which walk is best etc
It all takes a while and, depending on the dog, sometimes more dogs are easier than one tricky one.
I have been a bit tired, hence the lack of blogs this week.

4th November
Thank you Christine and Malc for giving Boycie a home of his own.
Hi Alison
Well, I was hoping to get some lovely photos of boycie running in the fields this weekend but this morning is just a wash out! He has played ball as usual with me mucking out and him bringing me his tennis ball to throw and he never tires!! but he's now laying flat out by the log stove with hubby as usual, looking very happy and hot.
Photo attached and excuse the washing drying.
I was very proud of Boycie at dog obedience, although at the beginning, he did act as though he would like to eat the other two dogs in the class; one a lovely puppy and the other a newly adopted mongrel from a local rescue centre. He was very stressed to start with, and did leave a big parcel in the middle of the hall just to prove his stress. However, half way through the class, he was much calmer and did pay attention to me and less to the other dogs. He was very obedient walking to heal and as you know he is a very bright boy and sits and gives his paw on command and he learned to lie down towards the end. He jumps in the car with enthusiasm and has not been sick once I am pleased to say.
We wouldn't part with him for anything now and I think he is very happy being the only dog and getting lots and lots of attention!

We recently heard from Nathalie with an update on Dolly :-
Sorry not to have been in contact for a while. I thought you might
enjoy a quick update on Dolly. She continues, as always, to be a
delight! She comes to school with me every day to drop the kids off
and pick them up. She waits patiently by the school gates and has
become something of a mascot with all the other children. If for some
reason she can't come with me, I regularly find disappointed children
in tears looking for her!
Here are some photos of her enjoying her most recent holiday in Wales!

2nd November
There was a half dead pigeon down the garden this morning, I had to put it out of its misery. The next dog to go out afterwards was Angel. She sniffed the spade I had used, followed my scent down the garden, sniffed where the deed was done, came back up sniffed the bottom of the spade and then sniffed the top so she knew I had held it. A complete recall of events told in doggy language! She should definitely work for the police, as a detective!
I saw Saffy this evening with Jude and Adam. She was like a different dog, pleased to see me but so calm with no jumping up. The furniture has been re-arranged to accommodate her bed and she just ignores the cat. She has adopted the bean bag, has her own sofa upstairs and sleeps flat out on whatever piece of furniture takes her fancy when no-one is there!
It is lovely to see her so happy.
They are going to continue fostering for a few more weeks to really let her settle in and make sure it is going to work for everyone.
Adam wants us to know he does get properly dressed and is not always to be found in his pyjama trousers which appear in most of the photos.
Here is a pic to prove it.

Things are moving so fast I think I had better publish this quickly. This is the link for the story on Kos the Staffie sniffer dog which our webmaster Mark looked up for us.
Gareth says there is a part on the website where you can nominate a dog.(We are sending Angel's details shortly!)
I will add to this later as we almost had our own news story to top it!
http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/LocalPages/NewsDetails.aspx?nsid=26320&t=1&lid=1
At lunchtime today I was just driving to Homebase when I heard on the radio the sad story of a 71 year old lady who was believed to be attacked by her daughter's five dogs when she went to feed them and suffered a fatal heart attack. At the time not many other details were known. The dogs were big Bull breeds (Dogue De Bordeaux) and it happened at Morden (very close to Val) I then received a text from Val as they were listening on the way to take the dogs to the beach. Jeremy Vine the presenter (obviously not a dog lover himself) was asking why anyone would want to keep five or more dogs! I sat in Homebase carpark listening, convinced that at any moment I would hear Val telling Jeremy she not only owned five SBT's but she was, at that time, on holiday with them and they all slept in bed with her and hubby!
It didn't happen but only because Val did not get through in time!
I saw little Chloe today. She is really looking fantastic. Now five months old. Abi will treat her mange again in the next few days.
News from Kerry about Rhea our agility star. Last weekend she had a seven year old girl run her. All was going brilliantly, a really fast round. when the little girl got flustered and Rhea responded by jumping head height and trying to kiss her!
Jesse (now 6 months) is off a week tomorrow Friday 9th November to be 'snipped and chipped.'
We have a new dog 7 month old Rose coming in on Sunday.
